Informatics collaborates with Westminster

The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) entered into a collaborative arrangement with the University of Westminster which was founded as the Royal Polytechnic Institute in 1838.

Westminster was the first modern University to be awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise. IIT is the successor to Informatics Institute of Computer Studies (IICS) established in 1990 by Informatics (Pvt) Ltd.

In collaboration with the University of Westminster IIT will provide a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses including BSc (Hons) Computing, Internet Computing and Software Engineering.

IIT also offers full-time Hons. Degrees in Computing and Information Systems and Management related courses of the University of London External Program.

MBSL seminar on Corporate Strategy and the Balanced Scorecard

The Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka (MBSL) will conduct a full day seminar on the formulation of a Corporate Strategy and translating it into action through the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) on March 15 at the Trans Asia Hotel. This seminar will be conducted by MBSL's Managing Director Sunil G Wijesinha, assisted by Ms Shyamalee Amaratunga, the bank's Assistant Director who formulated MBSL's BSC.

The Corporate Advisory Services Department of MBSL has been conducting a number of seminars, workshops, breakfast meetings, etc. to promote modern concepts and practices of management. The department has also provided a consultancy services to private and public sector institutions on several aspects. Wijesinha who gave leadership to the preparation of a Corporate Plan and Balanced Scorecard at MBSL, recently attended an APO sponsored symposium on the BSC in Malaysia and has benefited from the case studies of some of the best Balanced Scorecards in Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and India.

Chamber of Commerce seminar on GSP

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will conduct a seminar on the new Generalised System of Tariff Preferences of the European Union (popularly known as GSP), from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. on March 21, 2005 at the Chamber auditorium. The scheme, which is likely to come into effect from April 2005, will provide duty free or preferential access for exports from developing countries to the European Union.

The scheme is revised every 10 years and the latest revision is due this year. Sri Lanka is positive of being the first and most likely the only developing country to get additional duty concessions under GSP + scheme. The Developing countries committed to ratifying 28 conventions on labour, good governance and environment would be eligible for GSP + benefits.

Accepting the Chamber invitation, Roshan Lymann, the Economic and Trade Advisor of the European Delegation in Sri Lanka, will explain the new GSP scheme. Sonali Wijeratne, Deputy Director of Commerce from the Department of Commerce would also be present to take on the queries of participants.

EDB gem promotion held

The Export Development Board sponsored renowned gemologist Sheriff Rahuman to address the "International Coloured Gemstone Association (ICA) Congress" in Thailand recently.

ICA is the main promotional body which undertakes international promotion for the coloured gemstone industry. During the ICA Congress 2005, the organisers dedicated a day for the promotion of gemstones from selected countries, where Sri Lanka too presented a paper.

The Chairman EDB Rohantha Athukorala said, "It's a honour to present the Sri Lanka strategy on jewellery to the world. The ICA conference is the best opportunity. The EDB is investing a total of US$ 361,000 as equity which is 34% of the share capital in redeemable preference shares of the Ceylon Sapphire Council (Ltd) formed to implement the "Ceylon Sapphire Brand Strategy", with the balance investment coming from eight private sector member companies.

Downward trend continues

Price indices moved down yesterday with the All Share Price Index (ASPI) moving down by 3.1 points while the Milanka Price Index (MPI) reported a negative growth of 10.4 points. The ASPI which started at 1,715.14 points closed at 1,712.02 points moving down by 3.12 points while the MPI which started at 2,329.93 points closed at 2,319.49 points moving down by 10.44 points.

A total turnover of Rs 858.6 Mn was recorded. Foreign investors were the net sellers in the market with purchases of Rs 38.3 Mn and sales of Rs 75.5 Mn.

A total of 7358 trades were concluded with a share volume of 126.3 Mn shares being traded. Top gainers for the day included Tess Agro, Lankem Developments, Colombo Land, and Blue Diamonds.

Workshop on project preparation

The first workshop on projects preparation for IT degree and London A/L students was conducted at the MIIT Education Centre recently.

Dr. M. Kumar the convenor and chief administrator welcomed the candidates and participants.

Senior lecturers at Software Solutions International (SSi) Senthil Gopal, dealt with Dot Net. Parwais Jan spoke on Java, R. Jayakumar lectured on Oracle and Santush Karthik focused on Java 11.

Software Solutions International (SSi) is affiliated to SSi India. It is known as one of India's largest software education companies and is ranked among the top 500 corporate entities.

In Sri Lanka, SSi is franchised to Mercantile Institute of Information Technology, part of the KMK Group of Companies. It is also a BOI company.

JBIZ to meet political leaders

The Joint Business Forum (JBIZ) plans to meet leaders of all political parties in order to make proposals on how best the relief and reconstruction efforts could be undertaken as a means of building confidence towards the achievement of the larger objective of Peace.

The President of the Forum Kingsley Bernard has written to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in this regard. He has also stressed the need for expediting the housing and land allocation for about 100,000 tsunami affected people. The JBIZ comprises the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka, the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries, Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry of Sri Lanka, the Employer's Federation of Ceylon, the Exporters Association of Sri Lanka , National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka , International Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka , Sri Lanka Banker's Association.
