Tokyo Cement acquires brand new vessel

Tokyo Cement Colombo Terminal (Private) Ltd. (TCCT), formerly known as Samudra Cement Company, announced the acquisition of the vessel M V Tabernacle Prince to ensure exclusive supply of cement to the local market.

The TCCT officially launched the M. V. Tabernacle Prince at Prince Vijaya Quay (PVQ 2) of the Colombo Port last Friday.

A subsidiary of Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) Limited, and a prominent name in the local Cement market, the Samudra brand will continue to serve the local consumer through Tokyo Cement Colombo Terminal (Private) Ltd.

A brand of cement with strong and long lasting properties, Samudra is strengthened with state-of-the art silo storage and packing system in the port of Colombo which enables them to provide best quality Cement to the Sri Lankan consumer.

Purchased in early 2004, the M. V. Tabernacle Prince underwent a complete re-fitting process, which ensured the conversion of the vessel to suit present market needs and conditions. Equipped with state-of-the art Cement loading and unloading systems, the vessel has the capacity to carry 17500MT of Cement at a maximum draft of 9.4m.

Three loading options are available with the fully converted vessel, which can be selected depending on respective port conditions. Unloading of the full capacity of cement carried in the vessel can be easily completed within two days.

Thus, the loading and unloading options of Tabernacle Prince is geared to function under any port conditions of the world. Moreover, the process is totally environmental friendly as well as super efficient.

The conversion of the vessel took place at Chengxi Shipyard, China with the supplier of equipment for the conversion, BMH Marine of Sweden being present throughout the re-fitting process.

Chairman of the company, Deshamanya A. Y. S. Gnanam said that Samudra Cement has always striven to be an innovator and trendsetter in the Sri Lankan cement industry and the acquisition of the Tabernacle Prince is bound to uplift its position to heights never reached before.

The parent company of TCCT, Tokyo Cement Company Lanka Ltd. (TCCL) became the first cement manufacturer in Sri Lanka to obtain the SLS 107 Certification. Due to the commitment to continuous improvement the TCCL was also awarded with ISO 9002 quality management system certification, which is another industry first in the country.

The Group is also engaged in the manufacture of Mitsui, Atlas and Hinode brands of cement - market leaders in the premium quality and economy product segments.
