British private sector keen to help rebuild Lanka - BCCB Chief Executive By Channa Kasturisinghe The visiting Chief Executive of the British Consultancy and Construction Bureau (BCCB) Graham Hand yesterday said that the British private sector is keen to provide Sri Lanka their fullest support in the post tsunami reconstruction process. Hand said the BCCB which represents a wide range of companies in the construction sector will be able assist Sri Lanka with high quality expertiseto successfully complete key infrastructure projects. He said the BCCB representatives were due to meet Sri Lankan authorities including Advisor to the President Mano Tittawella, who heads the Task Force for Rebuilding the Nation, to discuss the BCCB's potential contribution in the longer-term rebuilding and reconstruction of the areas affected by the tsunami. "We also expect to meet the donor agency representatives here to find out in which areas we could assist. There are BCCB member companies which are already operating in Sri Lanka and their support will also be vital. We are also planning to jointly work with the local construction companies in the reconstruction projects," Hand said. He also said that the British government has already pledged the Sri Lankan government a substantial amount of financial assistance for rebuilding the nation and the British companies expect most projects funded by their government will be implemented through these companies. "However, there is no hard and fast rule that these contracts should essentially go to British contractors. Companies of other countries are also eligible to bid," Hand said. The BCCB's program here is organised by the British High Commission in conjunction with the Board of Investment, the Council of Business with Britain and the European Union and the National Construction Chamber of Commerce. The delegation will stay in the country till March 4. BCCB has about 280 leading British companies as its members. |
