Kandy SC clinch Singer Sevens title

Kandy Sports Club started their campaign for the 2005 rugby season when their 'A' team became Cup Champions at the Kandy leg of the Singer Sevens Circuit 7 a side rugby tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka (Pvt) Limited and with associate sponsors Crys Bro Broiler Chicken and Hutchinson Telecommunication when they beat CR and FC 'A' by the narrow margin of 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to 24 (2 goals, 2 tries) before a large crowd at Nittawella yesterday. At half time CR and FC 'A' led 14-12.

Kandy SC 'A' ran into an early lead through 50 metre try by winger Pradeep Liyanage and later Nalaka Weerakody scored a snap try and goalled one of them for Kandy to lead 12-0.

But CR and FC 'A' hit back by scoring two quick tries through Wekadapola and Asnaga Rodrigo with the latter converting both tries in lead 14-12 at the breather.

But after the turn around Kandy played well to score two 50 metre tries through Skipper Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Pradeep Liyanage with both being goalled for Kandy to lead once again 26-14.

But CR and FC 'A' fought back to score two more tries through M. Sheriff and Asanga Rodrigo but they went unconverted which deprived them the chance of snatching the lead once again.

The distribution of awards took place immediately after the finals with Asitha Abeysekera of Singer Sri Lanka and new President of the SLRFU Priyantha Ekanayake presenting the main awards.

Army SC 'B' beat Navy SC 'B' by 19 points (two goals, one try) to 5 (one try) in the Shield Finals. Half time Navy 'B' led 5-0.

Kandy Sports Club 'B' became Bowl Champions when they registered a 19 points (two goals, one try) to 7 (one goal) win over Navy 'A' in the final. At half time Kandy 'B' led 14-0.

For Kandy prop Jeewa Galgamuwa (1), lock S. Hettiarachchi (1), and centre S. Weerakoon (1) scored tries and stand off Nilfer Ibrahim goaled two of the tries. For Navy 'A' centre S. Niyadagala scored a try in the final minute of play and goaled it himself.

CH & FC 'A' lifted the Plate Trophy by defeating CR & FC 'B' by 31 points to 14. At half time it was CR 'B' who led 14-12.

For CH 'B' tries were scored by Dilanka Wijesekera (2), S. Subhakaran (2), and Saranga Jayakody (1) who also goaled three of the tries.

For CR & FC 'B' Charith Kodagoda and Roshan Peiris scored a try each and the latter goaled both tries.
