Hemas to re-build tsunami ravaged pre-schools Ramani Kangaraarachchi Hemas Holdings launched a Rs. 100 million project to build pre-schools in tsunami affected areas in Ampara, Galle, Hambantota and Matara. The company pledged an initial of Rs. 25 million and said it would look to contributions from other donors to collect the balance Rs. 75 million within 18 months. An MoU was also signed with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare for the re-building of 20 pre-schools. Heads of the Hemas tsunami task force Murtaza Esfally addressing a press conference at Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo last Friday said that the project envisages the building of 20 new pre-schools for over 2,000 children and the fund would also provide educational equipment, specialised training for teachers and conduct parental teacher awareness campaigns to understand the long term psychological needs of the children. Over 100 pre-schools have been completely destroyed and another few hundred were badly damaged during the tsunami, he said. Hemas corporate relations manager Shiromi Masakorala who works full time on the project was positive in achieving expected results from this project and said that the Ministry of Social Welfare and Hemas have developed a strong relationship by pursuing a common vision for the care and development of small children in the country outlined in the government's ECCD(Early Childhood Care and Development) national policy. Minister of Social Welfare Sumeda Jayasena also spoke. |
