Six killed as blasts, gunbattles hit polls in lawless Indian states NEW DELHI, Thursday (AFP) - Six people were killed and dozens injured as blasts, gunbattles and street brawls marred the last phase of legislative elections in two lawless Indian states Wednesday, officials said. A soldier died in a landmine ambush in Jharkhand state where voting was held for 28 seats amid a poll boycott call by Maoist insurgents, officials said from the capital Ranchi. In adjoining Bihar state, troops shot dead one person during an exchange of fire with supporters of a candidate in the town of Mokama while four people died in separate blasts when bombs they were making exploded in Vaishali and Siwan districts, police said. Political rivals also fought gunbattles and tried to attack voting centres in the constituency of Danapur near Patna, prompting police to open fire, officials said, adding a federal election observer was attacked by voters in the town of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. |
