by Thakshila Jayasekara Wickramaarachchi Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda has ordered an immediate probe into Wednesday's shooting incident outside the Kilaly Army forward defence lines where a soldier was killed and another injured. Private J. M. U. Priyadarshana of the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment was killed in the shooting while Lance Corporal, W. M. Wijesundera was critically wounded. According to the Army spokesman Brigadier Daya Ratnayake the soldier attached to the Vijayabha Regiment was shot dead in front of the Army forward defence line, Kilali around 5.00pm on Wednesday. Another soldier who sustained injuries in the attack admitted to the Palali base hospital, is now receiving treatment. Spokesman Brigadier Ratnayake referring to the incident said it was a serious violation of the Ceasefire Agreement by the LTTE. The army has reported the incident to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) who rushed to the scene by 01.20 hours, he said. The spokesman also said that the Army, Kodikamam Police and the SLMM were investigating into the incident. "The body was handed over to the military," the spokesman added. The condition of the injured soldier is now improving. He underwent an operation on Wednesday night,he said. "In many occasions during the past three years, the LTTE cadres have walked into Government controlled areas with weapons individually and driven troop-wise. But not in a single occasion soldiers acted in an irresponsible manner. They have always acted in a very responsible manner with a broad understanding. Maximum they have done is, to take into custody and hand them over to the Police. But in this instance the LTTE had not acted with a broad understanding and a sense of responsibility. This is a serious violation on the part of the LTTE", he said. Meanwhile, the Kilinochchi LTTE office announced yesterday that members of the LTTE women's brigade on duty in their forward defence line had opened fire at a group of army personnel who tried to enter their area through the no-mans land. LTTE Media Spokesman Daya Master who confirmed the LTTE announcement, said they allowed the army to remove the injured soldier and the body of the other yesterday morning. |
