I would never leave UNP - Mahinda Samarasinghe

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi and Ranil Wijayapala

Chief Opposition whip and UNP stalwart Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday told Parliament he would never leave the UNP.

Referring to a news item appeared in a daily Tamil newspaper (not of the Lake House Group), Samarasinghe said he had been in the Party for 18 years and had come a long way up to the present position.

"I don't want to leave the Party," he added while making a special statement at the commencement of yesterday's sittings.

The particular news item had stated Samarasinghe was planning to cross over to the Government by obtaining a portfolio.

While emphasising the need of a new political culture to the country, Samarasinghe said all parties should come together on national issues. "We can't do politics with national problems. I am a person who is engaged in middle path politics.

I extend my support to any good move while offering constructive criticism to wrong-doings," he added.

Samarasinghe noted there must be a person with vested interests behind the news item.

"We must try to find the culprit behind this. I request the Speaker to look into this," he added.
