by Wasantha Ramanayake Two police officers of the Anti-Corruption Unit filed a Special Leave application in the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the order of the Court of Appeal that dismissed the revision application challenging the Magistrate Court order which granted anticipatory bail to former Minister Ravi Karunanayake. Petitioners Ruwan Gunasekera, OIC of the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Crime Division, Police Head Quarters and ASP C. E. Widisinghe of the same unit cited former minister Ravi Karunanayake as the respondent. The petitioners stated that the Court of Appeal had dismissed the Revision Application seeking to set aside the Magistrate Court order that granted anticipatory bail to Karunanayake. They stated that the order of the Court of Appeal dated January 13 held that the provisions of the bail act was applicable to a person who was alleged to have committed or concerned in committing with an offence falling within meaning of the proviso to the Section 8(1) offence against the Public Property Act. The petitioners stated that Karunanayake was granted anticipatory bail by the Colombo Magistrate. They stated that Karunanayake was concerned with the commission of a criminal breach of trust in Rs. 15,675,000, an offence against the Public Property Act. |
