The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) organised a workshop on Web Cataloguing in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office in New Delhi. There are 13 international participants from Bangladesh, India, Laos, Nepal, Myanmar, Pakistan and four from Sri Lanka. The inaugural reception of the workshop was held on February 22 at Galle Face Hotel. The Chief Guest at this session was Dr. Susanne Ornager, Advisor, Regional Advisor for Communication and Information, UNESCO New Delhi Office. The workshop began at the Sri Lanka Press Institute on February 21. It will be held until February 25. This is the first of this kind of workshop held in Sri Lanka for the region. SLLA has more than 15 years experience in training library professionals in using CDS/ISIS and WINISIS. WINISIS is a software package developed by UNESCO to enhance library automation in developing countries. The software is available to the developing countries free of charge. The workshop is aimed at training and educating library professionals in the South Asia region on developing bibliographic databases and publishing them in Internet in the form of Web Catalogues. Web catalogues, directories, indexes and other bibliographic databases help dissemination of knowledge very effectively as they have wide visibility and accessibility. Information resources in the South Asian region are unknown to the rest of the world mainly because they are not accessible through Internet. |
