Sanath takes commercial break:

Teams up with Dilhani, Arjuna for film with novel theme

Veteran actor Sanath Gunathilake does not hesitate to act in commercial films if there is a good script, despite the fact that he won a number of awards in recent times for his roles in artistic films.

"Commercial films are necessary for sustaining the film industry," says Sanath emphasising that attempts should be made to produce quality commercial films.

Sanath is busy nowadays with his latest commercial film where he has teamed up with popular actress Dilhani Ekanayake and emerging celluloid hero Arjuna Kamalanath. This film named "Naga Kanyawi" promises to give a new kind of experience to the local cinema lovers.

"This is a film which carries a novel theme," Sanath told Stage and Screen at the shooting location of the film, in Moratuwa, Panadura.

The film is woven around a person (Sanath) who gets a new life over the killing of a snake (cobra) when he was a child. A couple who had become snakes due to a curse is about to get human lives when the male snake is killed to give life to Saman (Sanath) and the female snake is determined to take revenge for this.

The parents send Saman to India in order to save his life where he marries to Madhu (Dilhani), a young girl who comes to India to study music.

Despite opposition from Saman's mother, the couple comes to Sri Lanka for a holiday.

The female snake gets into action and finds that the easiest way to take her revenge is through Madhu. The soul of the female snake gets into the body of Madhu who thereafter becomes fully influenced by the snake.

Saman's brother Jagath (Arjuna) who studies snakes suspects the unusual behaviour of her sister-in-law. Will his intervention be able to save the life of his brother ?

The whole film is packed with tension with a cast of real snakes and the film would give a novel experience to the film lovers.

The film's co-directors are A.A. Junaideen and Suresh Kumarasinghe. P. Arooran is the film's producer while Junaideen is also a producer. The cast also comprises M.K. Sudakar, K. Janaki, Harinath and Rex Kodippili. Camera is by Lalith Thomas.

The film's script writer and co-director Junaideen got the idea for this film from his long-standing university friend. "It was in my mind for a long period before turning into a script."

Junaideen started his career in the middle of 1960s as the script writer of the Sri Lanka's first local Tamil film "Taxi Driver" directed by T. Somasekeran. Thereafter, he contributed to over 20 locally made Tamil films.

He was happy about the way the shooting was in progress.

"The shooting is progressing very well and we will be leaving for India for the rest of the shooting. I am confident that film would achieve a good response from the audience."

He said it was very easy and interesting to work with Sanath.

"He is giving us a worthy cooperation and assistance. Although he is a popular star, he is working with us in a very humble manner. Others are also cooperating well," he said.

Dilhani Ekanayake who is playing the female lead role said this film is a different one and would give a novel experience to cinema lovers. "This is my fourth film with Sanath and he is giving me good support as in other films," she added.

"No doubt, this is a commercial film, but such films are necessary for sustaining the film industry," Sanath says while taking a rest from a busy day's shooting.

Sanath lamented that most of the commercial films produced in Sri Lanka in the recent times were obscene. "We need commercial films which would create a new trend while giving a novel experience to the audience."

While the shooting was going on, Sanath has received invitations from several young directors. The main reason is his flexibility. "I am ready to work with everyone and a host of new directors have invited me to join them. We must encourage these young cinematic creators."
