Saunders take firm grip on Kit Premier League Title

by Bernard Perera

Saunders SC who reached the top of the Kit Premier League points table for the first time this year took a unbeatable position last weekend when they trounced victory two goals to one at City League Grounds. Saunders are now well ahead of second placed Ratnam with 66 points from 29 matches. Blue Star SC too are placed second with 61 points from 29 matches.

Saunders SC the club from Pettah which failed to clinch the Premier League Title for five long years though they had a tag "Glamour Boys of Soccer" has at last come up with superlative performance this year.

They were placed among the top ten teams for a long duration this season. During this period it was Ratnam SC and Blue Star SC the defending champs who were at the top changing places every now and then.

This period also saw Negombo Youth SC, Java Lane SC, Army SC, Air Force SC and Police SC teams trying their best to overcome each other while Saunders kept on moving slowly but steadily to reach the top in the last stages of the season.

According to present standings Ratnam SC and the defending champs Blue Star SC are engaged in a ding dong battle for the third slot with equal number of points. With only one match each for these teams even victories will not help them to come on top.

Negombo Youth SC placed at fourth slot is sure to take the second slot with two more matches in their hands. They have a total of 62 points after last weekends victory over Blue Star SC 3 goals to two. If the Kalutara Club came up with a better performance in that game they could have stuck to the second position.

This loss cost them very badly for the defending champs. Negombo lads will definitely go all out to win the remaining matches with the sole intention of coming closer to the leaders Saunders.

At Katunayake it was another interesting game with Airforce holding Java Lane SC to a one all draw. The draw helped Airmen to stay at the sixth position which they occupied the previous week too.

Meanwhile the match between two Kotahena teams saw the Renown SC overcome Old Bens SC one goal to nil at St. Benedict's ground. Here too no changes were seen from their standings.

The Kit Premier will come to end within a period of two weeks from now and it is sure that Saunders will carry away the trophy to Pettah's Price Park to celebrate after a five year lapse.
