Sport in NE to int'l standard soon Sports in the Northern and Eastern Province will be upgraded to international standard so that sportsmen and sportswomen from this part of the island could represent the country at the forthcoming Asian Games and the South Asian Games in 2006. The Governor of the North Eastern Province Tyronne Fernando said that plans are already under way to promote sporting activities in the North and the East with the idea of finding talented sportsmen and sportswomen who could represent the country at international events. The former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka said that all major sports namely volleyball, cricket, soccer, athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball, swimming, karate, rifle shooting, weightlifting and judo will be promoted in these areas while providing all coaching facilities. In fact plans are also under way to conduct an inter-district cricket tournament restricted to the North Eastern Province for the Governors Cup with the collaboration of Sri Lanka Cricket. In addition Kllinochchi and Pothuwil has been identified as suitable venues to construct an international cricket stadium. The Governor also said that a Director of Sports for the North and Eastern Province will be appointed so that sports activities could be developed and promoted in the schools, clubs and other community centres.
