Coir yarn industry to be revived By Irangika Range The Ministry of Small and Rural Industries has granted coir yarn spinning machines and raw materials to 200 coir cottage manufacturers in Madampagama, which was badly affected by the recent tsunami. The Minister of Small and Rural Industries K.D. Lal Kantha said that Madampagama is well known as a coir yarn-manufacturing village in Sri Lanka. It has been manufacturing coir yarns and coir yarn products to the local and the international market. "The industry has also created large number of job opportunities among the villagers by promoting their livelihood, the Minister said. "These 200 of coir yarn spinning machines have been provided by the Industrial Development Bank (IDB). Under this programme the Ministry granted one machine and 100 kg of coir yarn to one family," he said. |
