Call to reduce GHG emissions and costs by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction from industry in Asia and the Pacific" (GERIAP) Project seeks to support Asian business to address climate change by becoming more energy efficient and thereby reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and costs. Technical Co-ordinator for Small and Medium Enterprises Developers (SMED) S. W. B. Wijekoon said that this decision is followed by the Regional Stakeholder Meeting held to develop a national plan for overcoming barriers in the 8 GERIAP countries recently which was highlighted by the Energy Efficiency Survey 2004. The meeting was chaired by SMED Chairman Nihal Abeysekara. Wijekoon said that the project is designed to develop and demonstrate a mechanism for encouraging company level actions to increase the efficiency of energy use in their production processes, thereby reducing associated emissions, especially Green House Gases (GHG). The mechanism is used on the Cleaner Production approach to environmental management. As a result the combined environmental and economic benefits can be achieved simultaneously ,encourages companies to take action on their own. The project includes components on capacity building, practical demonstration efforts and review and evaluation of national policies. The targeted sectors are iron, and steel, pulp and paper, cement and lime, and chemicals. Bangladesh, China, India Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam are the participating countries in this project. In Sri Lanka five industries namely Holcim Lanka, Associated Motorways, Ceylon heavy Industries Construction, Dankotuwa, Lanka Tiles and Valachchenai paper mills are currently implementing energy efficiency improvement initiatives, according to Wijekoon. |
