Impetus for further improvement: Apparel exports record 10% growth by Sudarshana Perera The Apparel Exports from Sri Lanka recorded a 10% growth for the year 2004 registering a total of US $ 2684.1 million. This growth has surpassed previous records in 2002 and 2003 which were US $ 2293.4 million and US S 2443.7 million respectively. Apparel Sector analysts said that last year's growth was commendable as the apparel sector was confident of its future in spite of the fears on termination of Multi Fiber Agreement. Chairman, Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) M.P.T Cooray said that the assistance extended by the government to the garment industry by way of budgetary and other assistance have placed the industry in a position to remain viable in the long term. "Our apparel sector will continue to make growth in coming years and this achievement should be encouraging factor for the government and all those institutions engaged in apparel sector", Cooray said. "We have seen a continuous growth in during last few years and all our efforts will double the figure for the current year", he said. The government granted Rs. 167 million for a garment productivity improvement project which will help position the garment sector to successfully face the challenges emerging in the quota free era. |
