Jayantha wins kudos in Germany Jayantha Gomes, a Sri Lankan artist domiciled in Calw, Germany, has received a prestigious certificate, medal and a badge for his services from the Calw Municipality and its Mayor. He is the first Asian to receive this award. Jayantha who left for Germany in 1986 has been living in Calw holding exhibitions of his paintings, conducting workshops and writing books for children. At one of his exhibitions he re-introduced Herman Hesse's Siddhartha. In addition, he has held exhibitions in the USA, Norway and Switzerland.
The other recipient of the honour was Karin Rehm, a teacher in Calw, Germany. It was given for her organisations set up to protect children's rights. Jayantha Gomes is the author of Kaluwara Aruna. The book published by Sooriya Publishers was later translated into English by Kalakeerthi Edwin Ariyadasa. The novel depicts the harrowing experiences of a 15-year-old boy who is taken into custody by the police during the height of 1971 insurrection. It was a compelling piece of documentation monumenting the savagery and inhumanity of those who attempt to destroy law and order to satisfy their own ends. The first edition of Kaluwara Aruna was sold out within a short period. RSK **** Back **** |
