Sangakkara receives 'Super Lions' Award

Test Cricketer Kumara Sangakkara was awarded 'Super Lion' the highest sports award presented by Trinity College, Kandy at the prize giving held yesterday. Minister of Finance Dr. Sarath Amunugama was the chief guest.

Kumara started his sports career at Trinity Junior School. He represented the school at junior level in badminton, tennis, swimming, table tennis and cricket and became national champion in his age group in badminton and tennis.

He then took up cricket and represented the under-13 cricket XI coached by Upananda Jayasundera, under 13, 15, 17 and first XI teams under Berty Wijesinghe.

He first represented Sri Lanka "A" team in 1995 and having scored 154 against Zimbabwe was selected to the Test team. So far he has scored double hundreds against Pakistan in Pakistan, Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe and South Africa in Sri Lanka.

At the moment he is captaining the Central Province Cricket Team in the inter-provincial tournament and is also a regular member of the NCC. In addition he was selected to the Asian Team to play against World XI for the benefit of tsunami victims in Australia and New Zealand recently.

Kumar comes from a sporting family where his elder sister Thushari represented Central Province in basketball. His elder sister Saranga, also a top class tennis player and was the first outstation player to win the national title as a school girl at the age of 15. His elder brother Vemindra was a cricket colourman at Trinity College and represented the school in badminton as well.

Kumar was also a good student who represented the school in drama and debating contests. He passed the Advance Level Examination in the school in the Arts stream and entered the Law Faculty in the University of Colombo.

He was awarded the Cricket Lion and was appointed the Head Prefect and also won the Ryde Gold Medal for the best all round student during his days at Trinity College, Kandy.
