Three-month lay off for 328 BCC employees

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Labour Commissioner General, Mahinda Madihahewa has approved a lay off period for three-month to 328 employees of BCC who are not engaged in the production process due to the defunct state of the production department.

This lay off period will be effective from February 1 to April 30, 2005 and the employees will be paid their full salaries during this period.

Chairman, BCC, Nihal Hettiarachchi said that the company is trying to pay the compensation agreed by the workers within this lay off period under the Volunteer Retirement Scheme in an effort to revive the company.

The approval was granted following a request made by the Chairman in November last year.

BCC was in a financial crisis during the recent past as the production came to a halt and due to the excess staff.

At present only the oil refinery section and barrel production section are operational and around 100 workers involved in this process continue to perform their duties, said Hettiarachchi.

The government recently announced the privatisation of 49 per cent of the company which had a number of popular brands for antiseptic soap and cooking oil. A number of investors have already made inquiries regarding this.
