UK and US engineers on fact finding mission

A team of engineers from the Institution of Civil Engineering in UK (ICE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) met the officers of the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) last week following a fact finding tour to the tsunami affected areas in the South and East of Sri Lanka.

The Secretary Sri Lanka Institute of Civil Engineers Ranjit Tabrew said that they discussed on helping the government to set up a Disaster Management Centre with their professional skills to provide Honorary Consultancy and Construction support preferably from Sri Lankan professionals living abroad to work with Sri Lankan professionals, free technology transfer to assist to develop a Code of Practice to cope with Disaster Mitigation, and to assist in meeting the shortages of building material.
