To frame modalities to enter international skies:

CAA meets domestic airline operators

by Sudarshana Perera

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will meet representatives of domestic airline operators this week to discuss the modalities and rules and regulations following the Cabinet giving the green light to allow them to operate international flights from Sri Lanka.

Director General Civil Aviation Authority C. Nimalasiri said that the meeting would be vital as they would to expedite the process and to finalise arrangements to commence operations soon.

"A committee has been appointed by the cabinet for giving recommendation for any airline to fly international", said Nimalasiri. The three domestic airline operators, Expo air, Serendib and Lion Air welcomed the move by the government to allow them to operate international flights from Sri Lanka.

Aviation sector analysts said that any attempt by domestic airlines to operate in international sky will give them new business opportunity and the competition will result in a decline of prices of air tickets.

A spokesman from Expo Aviation said they would initially target the South Indian market which include Chennai, Trivendrum and Trichy and the Maldives for their operations.

"Getting Tourism and Aviation back on track and moving in the right direction is one of the priorities of the government and the domestic airlines could contribute to ease the regional traffic", Nimalasiri said.

Serendib which is a joint venture between three companies from Indonesia, USA and Sri Lanka earlier said they would be brining a 175 seater 727 flight soon and are ready to fly to far east and also Europe.
