School cricket review

Gihan's 15 wkt haul was the highlight

by Chris Dhambarage

Nalanda College produced their best performance for the season to register an emphatic eight wicket victory over Richmond College Galle in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Campbell Place during the weekend.

Their second win for the season was set up by leg spinner Gihan Rupasinghe who came out with an outstanding spell of bowling in both innings. Even then his effort in the second innings was more important as he came closer to performing the unique feat of capturing all ten wickets in an innings.

The Sri Lanka under 19 player certainly enjoyed bowling on his home grounds as he ripped through the Richmond batting in the second innings with career best figures of nine wickets for 77. He received all the backing from his teammates every time he picked up a wicket and it was most unfortunate that he could not claim all ten wickets which would have put his name in the record books.

Nevertheless Rupasinghe emerged as the matchwinner and his matchbag of 15 wickets was also a kind of an achievement. He opened the gates and set the pace for an easy victory while capturing six wickets in the Richmond first innings. His performance of course overshadowed the batting heroics of Sachithra Serasinghe who hammered a superb century in their first innings total of 294 for 7.

St. Sebastian's v St. Benedict's

St. Sebastian's College struck form for the first time as they routed St. Benedict's College outright by an innings and 46 runs in their inter school cricket tournament match played at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place during the weekend.

Their success had a great amount of significance because their previous win against the Benedictines was recorded in the year 1988. The Sebastianites of course failed to put up a big score on the board and were forced to declare their first innings at 208 for 6.

However that modest total was converted into a formidable one by their bowlers who ran through the Benedictine batting line up in both innings with paceman Jehan Fernando returning a matchbag of ten wickets. The Sri Lanka under 19 poolist grabbed the opportunity with both hands to prove his class on a seamer friendly wicket capturing eight wickets for 28 in the second innings.

The initial damage of course was done by Charith Fernando who picked up a six wicket haul in the first innings. The Sebastianite victory was always there from the moment they bowled out the opposition for just 90 runs in the first innings. But it came rather sooner than they expected with the Benedictines surrendering quite meekly in the second innings for a paltry 72 runs.

Thurstan v Maris Stella

Thurstan College powered their way to a morale boosting eight wicket victory over Maris Stella College Negombo in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Kadirana last week.

The Thurstanites went on to take a first innings lead of 117 runs mainly due to a captains knock of 74 not out from Sithuka Gamage who also figured in an unfinished fifty run partnership for the ninth wicket with Kanishka Elvitigala.

But their real matchwinner was paceman Lahiru Gamage who captured eight wickets including a hattrick in the Maris Stella first innings. As a result the home side were bundled out for just over one hundred runs and Gamage went on to add two more wickets to his tally which gave him a matchbag of ten wickets.

Richmond v Sri Devananda MV

Richmond College, Galle edged out Sri Devananda MV outright by four wickets in their inter school cricket tournament match concluded at Ambalangoda last week.

Sri Devananda MV were bundled out for 120 runs in their second innings with Chatupama Gunasinghe capturing five wickets for 20. Richmond College who were left with a victory target of 108 runs lost six wickets with Isuru Anushka stroking an unbeaten 47 following his half century in the first innings.

Richmond's success had great significance considering the fact that the entire team is still recovering from last month's tsunami disaster. But the lads from Galle played good positive cricket from the start and completely outplayed their opponents in all departments of the game.

The best batting performance for Richmond came from Isuru Anushka who played the sheet anchor role in both innings. He first guided his team to a safe position by compiling a solid 55 in their first innings total of 173 runs. He then followed up with an unbeaten knock of 47 in the second innings when Richmond were left with a victory target of 110 runs.

Wesley v Trinity

Fifteen-year-old left arm spinner Sachith Pathirana captured 5 for 48 giving him a match bag of 8 for 53 as Trinity College powered their way to an innings and 25 runs win over Wesley College in their inter-school cricket tournament match worked off at the Asgiriya Stadium, last week.

The Trinitians also regained the R. L. Kannangara Memorial Shield. With this matchbag of eight wickets young Pathirana brought his tally pass the 60 wicket mark in the current inter-school cricket season. Six of the Wesley batsmen in the second innings were adjudged leg before wicket, four of them off the bowling of Pathirana.

The final outcome of this game became almost predictable from the moment Wesley College were shot out for a mere 47 runs in their first innings. The only interest was how long the Wesleyites could survive in the second innings against the bowling of left arm spinner Sachith Pathirana and medium paceman Maduranga Munaweera.

The Wesleyites in fact doubled their first innings total with an improved batting performance in their second attempt but still could not avoid defeat. The Trinitians after their defeat at the hands of St. Joseph's College in Colombo, were more determined on the field and simply wrapped up the game with Pathirana and Munaweera again doing the damage.

S. Thomas' v Prince of Wales

S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia were just two wickets away from an outright victory as they were held to a draw by Prince of Wales College in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Moratuwa last week.

The Thomians made a fine attempt to make a match of it with a bold declaration mid way in the second innings. This almost brought them the maximum results as the Cambrians lost eight wickets during their run chase in the second innings. Skipper Vidhyesh Balasubramaniam led from the front with a tantalising spell of bowling finishing with a matchbag of eight wickets.

Subramaniam continued with his outstanding form with the ball this year with a five wicket haul which helped S. Thomas' build up a first innings lead of nearly one hundred runs. This was after Kaushal Silva had stroked a fluent half century with useful contributions coming from the bat of Shashrika Pussegolla and Dhanushka Colombage.

D. S. Senanayake v St. Aloysius

D. S. Senanayake College had to be satisfied with a draw after their opponents St. Aloysius College laboured almost the entire first day to score 195 runs in their inter school cricket tournament match worked off at Wijerama Mawatha last week.

St. Aloysius College made their intentions clear from the beginning with a defensive approach which saw them bat for a total of 90 overs which was rather frustrating for the fielding side. D. S. Senanayake were left with just three sessions of play to make a match of it and they went on to reach 267 with Dilum Harishchandra stroking an attractive 85.

****

Maliyadeva v Vidyartha

Shalika Karunanayake produced a splendid all round performance capturing seven wickets and scoring a half century as Maliyadeva College took major honours in their rain hit inter school cricket tournament match against Vidyartha College, Kandy played at Kurunegala last week.

The last year's captain returned excellent figures of seven wickets for 47 to restrict the opposition to 160 for 7 in their first innings. He then followed up with a top score of 54 as Maliyadeva reached 104 for when rain stopped play.

****

De Mazenod v Joseph Vaz

De Mazenod College cruised to their third outright win this season defeating Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa by eight wickets in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Kandana last week.

Joseph Vaz College never recovered after they were bowled out for just 58 runs in their first innings with Samith Silva capturing a four wicket haul. In the second innings it was Madhushanka who did the damage with the best figures of five for 43.

****

Ananda v St. Anthony's

St. Anthony's College fought back to hold Ananda to a draw in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Katugastota during the weekend.

The Antonians were almost down and out and were sliding towards defeat after they had collapsed to 111 in their first innings in reply to Ananda's 229 for 3 declared. But the home side batted more purposefully in their second innings to avoid any further disaster scoring a respectable 203 for 8 in their second innings.

Paceman Charith Jayaweera had set the pace with a hostile spell of bowling which helped Ananda take a good first innings lead of over one hundred runs. Ananda's first innings total was built around a superb century from Pradeep Boteju who struck 13 fours during his knock of 116.

****

Royal v St. Peter's

St. Peter's College came out with a pleasing performance to take major honours in their inter school cricket tournament match against Royal College played at Bambalapitiya during the weekend.

The Peterites had the satisfaction of scoring over three hundred runs in their first innings and also proved their bowling strength by dismissing the opposition for the second time in the game. Even then the Peterites would have not got pass the three hundred run mark without the contributions made by Prabuddha Perera and Lahiru Peiris.

The pair came into their team's rescue with a seventh wicket stand of 124 runs which completely changed the complexion of the game.

Perera was unfortunately run out just two runs short of a century while Peiris played the supporting role with a solid half century.

Royal too faced a batting collapse in their first innings and were saved by a fighting 96 not out from Malinga Maligaspe. They had lost half of their side for under 50 runs before Maligaspe joined in the middle to play a brave innings under tremendous pressure which eventually help them to make a decent total.

****

Thurstan v Maliyadeva

Maliyadeva College continued with their impressive run this season with another fine performance in their inter school cricket tournament match against Thurstan College played at Kurunegala during the weekend.

Maliyadeva had the luxury of enforcing the follow on after last years captain Shalika Karunanayake had stroked a splendid 131 in the first innings. Karunanayake who has been in top form this season also played a leading role with the ball as Thurstan were dismissed for 111 in their first innings.

***

Trinity v Dharmaraja

Trinity College powered their way to register their second straight victory in the current season overcoming the home town rivals Dharmaraja College outright by ten wickets in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Asgiriya during the weekend.

The match winner once again was young Sachith Pathirana who completed another ten wicket haul as the Rajans were dismissed for 66 and 201 respectively. Earlier Trinity had piled up 251 in their first innings with Maduranga Munaweera and Mohamed Safeer scoring half centuries.
