Lankan tennis star for French Open

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Eighteen year-old Sri Lankan tennis star, Oshada Wijemanne has qualified to play in this year's French Open tournament in Paris.

Chairman of the SSC's Tennis House Committee, Vasantha Wijesekera disclosed this at a news conference, held in connection with the forthcoming 22nd ITF Junior Under-18 Championship, at the SSC Tennis Pavilion last night.

Wijesekera said the Lankan teenage sensation has booked a berth in the qualifying rounds of the forthcoming French Open.

Wijemanne is currently ranked 189th in the ITF junior world rankings, having performed creditably at the recent ITF junior tournaments in Singapore and Bangladesh last year to improve from his original rating of 465th place.

Wijemanne, who will lead Sri Lanka's challenge at the ITF Junior International tournament in Sri Lanka next week, plans to stay within the top 200 players in the world.

His qualification to play in the boys singles qualifiers of the French Open will be an honour to Sri Lanka.

He is the highest ranked men's player for the 22nd ITF Junior International tournament, of which nearly 100 competitors from ten countries would vie for honours at the SSC courts from February 12.
