NED Bank in march

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The government will set up the National Enterprise Development Bank, dedicated to assist the Small and Medium Enterprise sector next month.

According to Minister of Advanced Technology and Enterprise Development Rohitha Bogollagama, the Director Board has been already appointed and is awaiting final approval. "The SME bank is a budget proposal of the government. Treasury has already allocated Rs. 2 billion as an initial deposit for this bank.

Over 50 percent of local gross domestic product is from the Small and Medium sector. "There is an urgent need to establish a support mechanism to promote the SME sector and with the damage caused by the tsunami this become even important," he said.
