CNCI launches trauma counselling for tsunami victims

An area which was not brought to the focus of the authorities and the NGOs very much was the effects of mental trauma suffered by the tsunami victims resulting from the loss of dwellings, furniture and household appliances, lifetime earnings and even the loved ones.

At a discussion held with the Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development, Rohitha Bogollagama where the representatives from Trade and Industrial Chambers and banks participated on 27th December 2004 the Chairman, Ceylon National Chamber of Industries, (CNCI) Nimal Perera highlighted importance of counselling of traumatise persons in the tsunami affected areas.

The minister requested CNCI to take the leadership on the task of counselling and accordingly they launched their pilot project from January 21 to 24 in two divisional secretarial divisions of the Galle district namely Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda.

The CNCI Chairman, Nimal Perera along with his Secretary General, Upali Samarasinghe met the Minister of Women Empowerment and Social Welfare and offered chamber services on this important aspect of rehabilitating the victims of tsunami disaster.

Galle district was assigned for the pilot project. The CNCI in association with Sri Lanka National Institute of Professional Counsellors (SLNIPC) headed by its President, Prof. D. S. Ranawaka launched a program in 9 welfare centres in Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda areas from January 21-24.
