Two cueists for Asian C'ships by Bernard Perera K. H. Sirisoma, national champion and number one and W. A. J. Weerasinghe, a former national champion qualified to represent Sri Lanka at the 4th Asian Billiards championship in Pune, India from February 19 to 26. The championship organised by Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports is conducted by Billiards and Snooker Federation of India. The top sixteen cueists were called for trials by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. K. H. Sirisoma (Sri Lanka Ports Authority), W. A. J. Weerasinghe (Automobile Association), Naresh Samarawickrama (YMBA, Galle) and M. U. Thasleen were the qualifiers for the semis. Sirisoma defeated Thasleen while Weerasinghe overcame Samarawickrema. In the final Sirisoma defeated Weerasinghe to take the top spot. Both Sirisoma and Weerasinghe have represented Sri Lanka at the World Championships on many occasions. Sirisoma's last appearance was at the 2003 World Billiards Championships in India. He fared well to reach the last eight. Weerasinghe though placed at number two is a seasoned campaigner with a lot of international exposure. D. G. Daluwatte, the International referee will join the team with Upali Thilakasiri who will go as manager. Ministry approval is awaited on these selections. |
