Kandy YMCA win national weight lifting titles by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Kandy won the national weight lifting championship after a lapse of 15 years and completed a double by winning the women's title as well at the national Senior Weight Lifting championships organised by the Sri Lanka Weight Lifting Federation which was held at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala. A very high standard of lifting was witnessed at this meet which saw three senior national records and six junior national records being lowered. Another remarkable performance was that for the first time in the history of weight lifting in Sri Lanka that three lifters hoisted over 120 killogrammes in the Snatch and 150 killogrammes in the Clean and jerk at the same meet. This was also the first time three lifters exceeded 270 killogrammes and five lifters passed the qualifying totals for the South Asian Games. M.M.P. Harischandra of Kandy YMCA competing in the 75 kg women's category lowered three records by snatching 40 kg, clean and jerking 50 kg making a total of 90 kg. The earlier record was held by C.V. Palagama of Menikdiwela MV who lifted 35 kg, and 40 kg. with a total of 75 kg. In the championship for men C.G. Withanage of Sri Lanka Air Force snatched 120.5 kg in the 69 kg. category to erase his previous record of 120 kgs. In the 94 kg. category Ranjith Kumara of Slimline SC, Pannala snatched 125 kg to better the previous record of 123 kgs. set by M. Wijeratne of Kandy YMCA. Weight lifting prodigy 17 year old Ransilu Jayatillake of Kingswood College, Kandy, competing in the 105 kg. category clean and jerked 167.5 kigs. to eclipse his own record of 161 kgs. The Kandy YMCA who are coached by S.A. Wijewickrema jnr. wrested the championship by accumulating 21 points and in second place was the defending champions Sri Lanka Air Force with 15 points while Polonnaruwa WLC finished third with 10 points. In the contest for women Kandy YMCA emerged champs with 10 points while Kandy Sports Club and Kegalle Sports Club finished joint runners up with 06 points each. |
