Wijayasiri in Kandy Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake told the recent monthly meeting of the Kandy Municipal Council that any request by the Municipal Council that S. B. Dissanayake be pardoned would be meaningless since he was sentenced to jail by the highest seat of judiciary in the land. He made these observations when a resolution moved by UNP member, Raja Pushpakumara that S. B. Dissanayake was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court should be given a Presidential amnesty and release was taken for discussion. Mayor Senanayake who presided over the meeting contended that S. B. Dissanayake was sentenced to jail on an order of a five judge-bench of the highest judiciary of the land so that any request by the council seeking his release would be meaningless. Alliance Member Anura Kumara Gonawala said that there had been a number of instances where accused in similar cases sentenced by courts. Moreover S. B. Dissanayake was sentenced to jail on his own plea. If he was given a pardon all others who are convicted and sentenced for contempt of court should have to be pardoned too. Independent Member Raja Samarakoon said that the council should not take a decision which would interfere with the judiciary. The resolution was carried by majority vote. The UNP voted for while the Alliance members and Independent Member Raja Samarakoon voted against. SLMC Member, Mathali Marikkar abstained from voting. |
