Join Govt's national program, Mangala tells UNP

Ports, Aviation, Information and Media Minister Managala Samaraweera said the UNP should actively join in the national program presented by the United People's Freedom Alliance including the SLFP and the JVP if the party has an actual need and honest feeling to rebuild the country.

He reiterated that the UNP and several media institutions partial to them is disturbed by the massive foreign assistance received by the government and go in their usual way of provoking the masses, being unable to bear the goodwill of the international community.

But however with their all tactics, they will not be allowed to topple the Freedom Alliance Government, he said.

The Minister said a national public opinion was created in the country for join action even for a short period to implement a national program shedding all differences.

He pointed out that UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had issued statements expressing his support in view of this public opinion and UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and several others had shown the commitment of their party.

He otherwise charged that the UNP is also engaged in the habit of it's opportunistic politics although the people expected the party to act in accordance with the people's friendly policy.

He also said certain members of the UNP were trying to mislead the people distorting the statement made by the President in Hambantota on January 19.

The Minister said the President had clearly stated that there was no possibility of holding another General Election for five more years. But the Opposition Leader had also made statements claiming that this is not the time to talk about elections.

However, the Minister claimed that the Opposition Leader is now engaged in a petty political process to prepare the Presidential Elections. The Minister also charged that members of the UNP and their leadership were giving election pledges under the cover of presenting a program to rebuild the country.

Samaraweera said:" There is a serious suspicion regarding the proposals put forward by Ranil Wickremesinghe."

He noted that the UNP could fulfil a more effective national task by actively contributing the policies implemented by the Freedom Alliance without engaging in such unsuccessful process if they have a genuine intention to rebuild the country.
