ICT to play major role in post tsunami rebuilding Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the e-libraries and Vishva Gnana Kendra's (Global Knowledge Centeres) set up by the ICT Agency will play a major role in post tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction. Prime Minister, Rajapaksa was speaking at the opening of an ICT centre at Godana, Kirinda. He said that tele centres will enable those affected, to have direct contact with the Government. "The Government has created a means of obtaining unbiased feedback which is not aligned to any particular political party, race, religion or caste. Those affected, from within their temporary residence within the camps, can express their views to the Government through communications channels now opened to them free." The Prime Minister also said that the real benefit of ICT to rural communities would be to meet the real needs of the people through ICT". "The Government, political leaders, government officials and policy makers must pay attention to the voice of the people. ICT is an important tool that can be used to do this. Let us use this tool to enable good governance in our country", he said. The ICT centres will provide telephone, fax, internet and email facilities free to persons within the IDP camps. The project is being carried out by the Prime Minister's office, the ICT Agency, Electroteks Global Networks (pvt) Ltd and Volunteer-Sri Lanka. (SP) |
