Krishnaswamy The Sri Lanka Islamic Centre (SLIC) which had joined relief operations in respect of the tsunami victims would now build 400 houses in the Eastern province and would also extend a monthly amount of Rs.2500 to 4000 most deserving widows/orphans, 80 each from Hambantota, Galle, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara for a period of six months, said SLIC Chairman and former Speaker M. H. Mohamed, MP at a press conference in Colombo. This assistance will be in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). The land for building the houses has already been procured in Addalaichchenai in the Eastern Province and an Indian company will be entrusted with the construction work shortly, he said, adding that their target is a total of 1000 housing units. Responding to the immediate humanitarian needs of affected people the SLIC organised medical camps in several tsunami hit areas and provided medicines, dry rations, drinking water and clothes, he said. In collaboration with the IDB, the SLIC provided Kaffan cloth to the value of US $ 5000 and distributed mats, school books and cooking utensils worth US $ 25,000 to refugee camps, Mohamed said. Funded by Ariff Azeez of Malaysia they also provided medicines to Karapitiya, Ampara and Kinniya hospitals, he said. Their next project is to start vocational training centres, including carpentry training, in several places to help the disaster victims in self-employment ventures, the SLIC chairman said. |
