Death certificates after one year for tsunami victims

The Law will be amended to issue death certificates after a year in respect of those killed by tsunami. The law as it stands now empowers to issue death certificate after seven years in respect of those who go missing, said, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda.

The Minister was meeting the Trade Union delegates at his Ministry where the issue of providing relief to the Tsunami was taken up.

There were complaints from some of the affected families stating that they have not received any assistance from the Government.

Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda said that some people who are displaced after the tsunami have complained that they have not received any relief so far from the Government.

"I have issued orders to look into this matter and have directed to send a team of officials led by a senior officer to the districts of Galle, Matara, and Hambantota and to submit a report within a week", the Minister said.

The officials will have to meet the respective Gramaseva Niladharis in the respective Provincial Secretariat level and examine to find out where things have gone wrong.

A number of government departments,ministries and various institutions got involved in providing relief to people who were displaced. Media had reported quoting some affected people that the strategies used have failed to give equal treatment to all suffered from the disaster.

Minister Dodangoda said it was the duty of the officials to provide relief to those people who deserve such assistance, if there has been any omission on the part of the officials due to heavy work, they should see that it is rectified within a week.

Minister Dodangoda also said that he expects to get the support of the trade unions directly in the rehabilitation work.

Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry sources said the Ministry has deployed a team headed by a senior officer to look into the complaints of the people who suffered from the tsunami tidal waves.

These people have pointed out that they have not yet received the money allocated from the Government as immediate relief material reported to have been issued on their behalf.

The officials, once they have peruse through each case will issue at the rate of Rs. 15,000 to the close relations of the dead, Rs. 2,500 for purchase kitchen utensils, coupons to those who have not received and take steps to provide Rs. 5000 as Samurdhi assistance, the sources added.
