Govt to strengthen legal provisions on adoptions

by Manjula Fernando

The Government is mulling strengthening the legal infrastructure on child adoptions to make way for the large number of tsunami orphans who are now in camps to be relocated with foster families.

Director Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force Dr. Tara de Mel told reporters on Wednesday they now have a much more clearer picture of how many children have been affected by the tsunami tragedy a month ago.

"The number of children who have been orphaned is around 850 and nearly 4,000 children have lost at least one parent," Dr. de Mel said.

"We have to immediately focus our attention to relocating these children with foster families," she said adding that to do this new adoption schemes with legal infrastructure have to be developed to ensure that these children do not fall prey to trafficking or other forms of abuse.

She stressed the need to strengthen the probation and childcare services to accommodate children in safe and secure places.
