US peace corps director touring Sri Lanka

Gaddi H. Vasquez, the Director of the United States Peace Corps is touring Sri Lanka.

Vasquez toured tsunami affected areas of the country yesterday and will be consulting with Sri Lankan Government officials on the feasibility of bringing former volunteers to Sri Lanka to aid in reconstruction, the Embassy of the United States of America said in a release yesterday.

The Peace Corps, an American government agency that sends volunteers around the world for two years, also manages a Crisis Corps of former Peace Corps Volunteers who spend between three and six months in crisis areas lending a hand.

More than 550 returned peace corps volunteers have served in crisis Corps since its inception in 1996, using their skills and experience to address ongoing community needs in more than 39 different countries.

Crisis Corps has responded to more than 300 natural disasters.
