President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga met a group of Indian Naval and Army officers and men engaged in relief operations in Sri Lanka post-tsunami yesterday. The meeting at the President's House lasted around 30 minutes. During the meeting, President Kumaratunga conveyed her personal gratitude and that of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to the Indian officers and men for the help they had rendered so "unstintingly". She noted that the Indian defence personnel were the first to arrive in Sri Lanka for humanitarian work immediately after the tsunami struck the island on December 26, 2004. The President praised the contributions by the Indian defence personnel to the relief work as "immense". She expressed the hope that further possibilities of cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in rehabilitation and reconstruction for tsunami affected areas would be worked out in the near future. During the meeting, the defence team members briefed the President on the work they had done and their experiences in the tsunami affected areas. The High Commissioner for India in Sri Lanka, Nirupama Rao and the Defence Adviser at the High Commission, Captain Suraj Berry were present. |
