Transparency and accountability top priorities by Manjula Fernando Stressing the need for an independent procurement agency, the Government on Wednesday reiterated that it considered transparency and accountability as top priorities in dealing with donor assistance during the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. Presidential Advisor and Special Task Force Director Mano Tittawela said an international consultancy body has offered to advise TAFREN on accountability, transparency and disaster management and the offer has been promptly accepted. "We would adhere to international standards for transparency and accountability," he stressed in response to a question by the Media at a recent press briefing. Tittawela said several academic institutions including the Post Graduate Institute of Management of the Sri Jayawardenapura University is actively involved in setting standards for the procurement, emphasising that TAFREN will not be directly involve in the actual procurement operations. "But certain standards have to be set since these procurement has to be made expeditiously," he explained. |
