Accused killer of former Indian minister swallows cyanide to evade capture AHMEDABAD, India, Wednesday (AFP) A man accused of murdering the former law minister of a southern Indian state killed himself Wednesday by swallowing cyanide to evade capture, Indian police said. Another alleged killer was taken into custody in Ahmedabad, the main city in the western state of Gujarat, police said. Aladi Aruna, 70, who was law minister of Tamil Nadu state until 2001, was shot and hacked to death late last month during a morning walk in the Tirunelveli coastal district of the state, police said. "We've got one of the men alive but the other consumed cyanide before we could prevent him," police deputy inspector general D.G. Vanzara told AFP. Aruna was the second member of the left-leaning DMK regional government which held power in Tamil Nadu between 1996 and 2001 to be killed. Police have blamed rivalry within the DMK for the other politician's killing but say the motive for Aruna's death is still under investigation. Police say a total of nine people were behind Aruna's killing. |
