Green light for tsunami-hit roads

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Highways Ministry has completed preliminary reconstruction on the highway network damaged by the tsunami waves.

Ministry Secretary S. Amarasekere told the Daily News that all highways in the country which were not passable after the disaster have now been cleared for traffic except one point in the East.

"The Arugambay bridge in the East has been badly damaged by the tidal waves and will require long term repairs before being cleared for traffic. But all other roads in the South and the East are motorable now," he said. Amarasekere said they have decided to construct a deviation to link the damaged area with the rest of the highway.

"In the meantime we have taken measures to transport people and goods by ferries," he added.

The Ministry is formulating a long term plan for the development of damaged highways using foreign aid.

Among the main features of the long term plan is the expansion of the Galle road into four lanes and the development of eastern highways avoiding areas susceptible to sea erosion.
