MADRID, (Xinhua) A ship with 120 tons of relief supplies will set sail Thursday from Spain for Sri Lanka to help the victims of the December 26 tsunami, officials said Wednesday. The assistance, donated by individuals, firms and institutions, includes medicine, sanitary material, milk, non-perishable food and clothing. These supplies will be distributed among displaced families and orphans in the shelters in the coastal city of Galle, some 80 km south of Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka. Independent groups of the Association of Messengers for Peace and Childhood, working in the victim shelters in Sri Lanka since December 29 will take charge of the distribution work. On December 26, an undersea magnitude 9 earthquake caused a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which killed at least 225,000 people and affected five million others in the coastal countries in Asia and Africa. |
