by Nadira Gunatilleke The head of the International Federation of Red Cross Suaarez Del Toro Rivero has commended the efforts and strategies employed by the Sri Lankan Government to provide relief to the tsunami victims and to rebuild the affected areas adding that the International Federation of Red Cross will extend its fullest support to Sri Lanka in this endeavour, a Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry spokesman said. He said that Rivero expressed those views during a courtesy call on Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena at her ministry recently. He also stated that the Red Cross Societies of the world have collected funds for Sri Lanka and already sent relief teams and aid to the different affected areas. He promised to provide financial and technical assistance for the rebuilding process of the country. The Minister requested assistance to rebuild fishing villages devastated by the tsunami. Several officials of the International Federation of Red Cross, its South Asian Pacific Region, and the President of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Jagath Abeysinghe were also present on the occasion. |
