The Government has decided to grant permanent status to all graduates who have completed training under the present graduate employment, by 21st May this year, thus fulfilling one of the key pledges made by the UPFA at the elections. This is in terms of a decision taken at a meeting attended by Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha, Agriculture, Live Stock and Lands Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake, UPFA President and MP Nandana Gunatilleke, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury Dr.S.B.Divaratne and Deputy Secretary Banduratne yesterday evening. "The 42000 trained unemployed graduates will be given permanent appointment under the Government, by 21st May this year", Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said . Deputy Minister Siyambalapitiya made this disclosure at a press conference held yesterday and added that this measure is a fulfilment of the Government's election pledge to the very letter and that it will dispel all speculations that the Tsunami Disaster would delay these appointments. This decision was taken following a discussion the relevant special committee had at the Finance Ministry yesterday(26). This was the committee appointed to regularise the Government's Programme of finding employment to unemployed graduates and to find solutions to problems connected therewith. Accordingly the Ministry of Finance and Planning will issue the relevant Circular to all Ministries, Provincial Councils and District Secretaries today (27) setting out instructions and deadlines to implement the decision. Deputy Minister Siyambalapitiya further observed that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was very keen in the fulfilment of this pledge and that the Government has no difficulty in providing employment to the 42000 graduates as there are already 35000 vacancies presently existing in Government Service in addition to a further 7000 posts that will come in to existence under the Government's new Development Programme. The Deputy Minister further said that a Committee of Appeal will be established to consider grievances and eliminate any injustice suffered by an appointee under this programme. |
