by Ranil Wijayapala Indian nationals in Sri Lanka yesterday celebrated the 56th Republic Day of India at a simple ceremony under the patronage of Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Nirupama Rao at the India House, Colombo. The ceremony to mark the 56th Republic Day of India was held as both Sri Lanka and India marked one month after the tsunami disaster with religious observances remembering thousands of people who perished in tidal waves. Addressing the flag hoisting ceremony, Indian High Commissioner Nirupama Rao said the tsunami has brought untold suffering, loss of life and livelihood to the people of two countries. "Our two nations are united at this time of sorrow in a 'Community of grief," she added. However she said adversity is also an opportunity to build strong bridges of friendship with each other and added that it was an opportunity to rebuild the affected areas in a comprehensive manner. "We must make this opportunity to turn this disaster for the betterment of the two countries," she added. The envoy said the long-standing relationship between the two countries strengthened during the past few weeks with India coming all the way to help Sri Lanka as it was its worst ever disaster. She said India will continue to support Sri Lanka in the endeavour of rebuilding the country. The High Commissioner made these observations while reading the address to the nation by Indian President Dr. Abdul Kalam. |
