Sri Lanka determinedly rising from the ashes

The entire nation, determined to rise from the ashes of the country's worst ever disaster marked the first one month since the tsunami disaster observing one minutes' silence as a mark of respect to more than 30,000 people killed in the massive tidal waves, as the clock struck 9.36 yesterday morning.

In an unprecedented move all national media institutions both electronic and print media made a united appeal to the people to observe one minutes silence giving a fine example of unity that emerged from the tsunami disaster to rebuild the devastated nation.

The leading television channels Rupavahini, ITN, TNL, Sirasa, ETV, Eye and ARTV and all the radio stations went silent at 9.36 am.

They simulcast the same programme on all television channels to mark this unique occasion.

Religious dignitaries from all faiths, politicians representing all political parties, students, artistes participated at the main event at the Independent Square held with the participation of Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera.

The national print media also expressed solidarity with this program participating at this national level program organised by media institutions.

They all unitedly read out an oath to make their contribution towards the rebuilding the nation.

The heads of all media institutions also marked this historic occasion by participating at a tree plantation ceremony at the National Museum grounds, Colombo at 9.40 am. Religious dignitaries from all faiths also gathered in Colombo to mark this occasion lighting candles in memory of all those who were killed in the disaster. The LTTE also observed a day of mourning in areas under their control yesterday.

Meanwhile, our Vavuniya group correspondent said religious ceremonies were held yesterday at temples, kovils, churches and mosques in the North and East to transfer merits on those who died and to invoke blessings on affected people in the tsunami disaster. A requiem mass was held at the Madhu Church by Rev. Fr. Rayappu Joseph.

A special pooja was held at the Vavuniya Municipal grounds with the participation of religious dignitaries of all faiths.

Religious ceremonies were also held in Jaffna, Killinochchi, Ampara and Batticaloa.
