SME entrepreneurs meet PM for redress Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse on Tuesday met representatives of small, medium and large scale entrepreneurs affected by tsunami. The meeting which was held at Temple Trees was attended by heads of chambers of commerce and industries, national level industrial organisations, officials of diplomatic missions and donor agencies. Minister of Advance Technology and National Enterprise Rohitha Bogollagama was present. The entrepreneurs mainly representing the business organisations in the Galle district, while bringing their major problems to the notice of the Prime Minister emphasised the 100 metre limit imposed with regard to reconstruction and pointed out that obtaining approval of the Urban Development Authority was the main obstacle they had to confront when raising loans for rehabilitation from Banking institutions. The Premier assured them that negotiations will be conducted with the lending institutions with regard to repayment of loans and any problems they might confront in raising loans for the revival of their enterprises. They also discussed the business community problems of the North and the East with special emphasis on reviving the Fisheries Industry in the Jaffna district which was seriously affected. They urged the government to provide immediate relief to bring back normalcy for the day to day living of the fishing community in the Jaffna district. The Premier told them that the government has taken steps to rehabilitate the fishing industry and that from next month the Classin Institute and the Standard Institute will jointly launch a common program to revive the fishing industry. Touching on rehabilitation of enterprises in the Hambantota district, the Prime Minister said that instructions have been given to constructors to obtain technical expertise and skilled workmanship such as carpentry to rebuild the institutions devastated by the tsunami disaster. |
