Water Board needs Rs. 24,820m to rebuild water projects

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) needs Rs 24,820 million to rebuild all the water projects destroyed by last month's tsunami according to its latest statistics.

This amount includes the cost to supply water to temporary camps housing refugees, to re-connect the destroyed domestic tap lines, to supply water to 200 transit camps and to purchase equipment to supply drinking water.

General Manager NWSDB Lal Premanath said that the Board representatives hold meetings every Tuesday at the ministry to co-ordinate matters between the relevant government institutions and NGOs. Under the supervision of the NWSDB two foreign donor agencies JICA and DANIDA are in the process of estimating the damage caused by the tsunami and preparing short, medium and long-term plans to rebuild those areas.

Chief Sociologist D.Seneviratne said that the NWSDB and NGOs have already started cleaning 3,500 wells and providing sanitary facilities to tsunami hit areas. They have also have provided a large number of water bowsers and tanks. The public could call 2623623 for any assistance, he said.
