More French investments in key sectors soon, says envoy

The French Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jean Bernard De Vaivre yesterday said that more French investors will come to Sri Lanka to invest in key sectors such as water management, power generation, telecommunication and irrigation.

He said following the tsunami the awareness among French investors about investment opportunities has grown and the disaster has not had any negative impact on their future investments. "They want to come to Sri Lanka in a bid to help rebuild the country," he said.

French investors are very keen "We have been helping Sri Lanka in power generation since the 1950's and hope to continue," he said.

He said that soon after the tsunami the French Government also decided to postpone the repayment of loans obtained by Sri Lanka. "The French government is also looking at other means to help rebuild Sri Lanka," he said. French tourists who were in Sri Lanka during the time were very happy over the manner in which they were looked after during the crisis. "They have all wowed to come back with their friends to Sri Lanka for the next season," he said.

French doctors, support teams and engineers are already in Sri Lanka and are helping in the rebuilding process.

To date the French Government has allocated almost 50 million Euro (Rs. 6.5 billion ) towards the countries affected by the tsunami. "We are working closely with the government of Sri Lanka in this regard and are keen on offering long term solutions", he said.

Sri Lanka's main exports to France are garments. The total value was 33 million Euro.

In addition the total value of rubber products such as gloves and tyres was 8.6 million Euro.

Tea and coffee exports were 6 million Euro while sea food exports stood at 5.5. million Euro.
