Public servants involved in tsunami aid fraud to face the music by Chamikara Weerasinghe Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda issued an order yesterday to interdict those public servants involved in tsunami aid fraud even if the slightest evidence could be found. The Minister had taken this decision after perusing hundreds of public complaints received by the ministry since the start of tsunami relief work, said U. G. Piyadasa, Private Secretary to the Minister. He is in control of the ministry's public complaints desk maintained to receive complaints of tsunami-related aid frauds and other related violations . U. G. Piyadasa, Private Secretary to the Minister, also told the Daily News that the ministry have launched investigations into eight cases of tsunami frauds where grama niladharis had been allegedly involved. Piyadasa said that in some cases it had been revealed that "Ration cards" issued to tsunami victims had gone to undeserving recipients instead of being given to affected victims. According to public complaints received so far by the ministry, officers of Divisional Secretariats and Grama Niladharis appear to have been involved in most of the frauds. The public has been informed by the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs to contact them on any complaints of irregularities in their areas connected to relief distribution on 077-3023812. |
