Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday to launch the first post-tsunami attempt to resume peace negotiations between the Government and the LTTE. The special envoy who initially raised Sri Lanka's peace hopes with a landmark meeting with LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in November 2000, will make a fresh attempt during his visit at resuming the stalled peace talks, a diplomatic source told the Daily News. Norwegian Deputy Minister Vidar Helgesen will also join Solheim in his visit to Sri Lanka. "Their visit to Sri Lanka is quite separate from the visit by Foreign Minister Jan Peterson who is expected to arrive here on Thursday. But the attempt of all three will be to bring the parties back to the negotiation table," diplomats said.
