Independent body to investigate December 26 train tragedy

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Railways Department has initiated an investigation into the December 26 train tragedy at Kahawa which caused the death of around 1,500 people.

Transport Minister Felix Perera told the Daily News that one objective of the investigation is to explore the possibility of compensating injured commuters and dependants of commuters who died in the accident. "There are complaints that the accident could have been prevented but for the negligence of the Railways Department. If that is true, we will have to compensate the victims of the disaster. The investigation that is going on will decide whether the Department was at fault or not," he said.

Minister Perera said that the investigation is carried out by an independent body appointed on his recommendations by the General Manager of Railways.

According to the Transport Ministry, the Colombo-Matara train destroyed by the tsunami waves had eight carriages transporting over 1,500 commuters to the South at the time of the disaster.

"The train has been badly damaged. But we will be able to use its under-frame to manufacture a new train," the Minister added.
