by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Samurdhi Development Officers (SDOs) and Samurdhi Managers will conduct a countrywide fund raising campaign today (January 20) with a view to assist the Samurdhi Development Officers (SDOs) and Samurdhi Managers displaced by the tidal wave catastrophe. Nearly 24,000 SDOs and 2050 Samurdhi Managers will participate in this fund raising campaign throughout the country today to assist their own colleagues displaced by the natural calamity by rendering their assistance to restore their normal lives , Chairman of the All Ceylon Samurdhi Managers Association (ACSMA) Somasiri Liyanage told the Daily News yesterday. Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi will inaugurate the program at the Battaramulla junction this morning with the participation of a large number of Samurdhi officials. The ACSMA and Samurdhi Development and Agriculture Research Officers Association will make a joint effort to implement this fund raising campaign countrywide and have named the 20th January as the National Disaster Relief Day. We seek public assistance to make our fund raising campaign into a success, he said. He said the entire work force of over 26000 SDOs and Samurdhi Managers will actively engage in this fund raising exercise. Therefore, every citizen can join hands and make their contribution to this program. The funds collected from this campaign will be mainly utilised to build the houses of SDOs and Samurdhi Managers damaged by tidal waves. According to statistics, six SDOs have died while the houses of 324 SDOs and Samurdhi Managers were destroyed by the tsunami tidal waves. Therefore the objective of this program is to assist the families of these Samurdhi officials to return to their normal life as soon as possible, he said. |
